Dolphins are rated amongst those special animals in the animal kingdom having the highest IQ, owing to their superior communication and interpretation skills, a fact aptly demonstrated by dolphin instructors in water parks where dolphins are trained to perform tricks. Dolphins have become a part of western popular culture emanating from their prominence in movies like "Flipper" and "The Day of The Dolphin".
In fact humans are so fascinated by these cuddly creatures that special entertainment venues called dolphinariums have propped up around the world where spectators marvel at the tricks these dolphins display With a white belly and the entire body black on the back and gray flanks, the dolphins anatomy resembles that of the whale. These features make it easy to identify the dolphin while it rides the waves. The dolphin has a short beak, and long curved flippers. It has a gray dorsal fin that is tall and curved. A fully grown dolphin can measure upto 2.5metres and weigh up to 180 kilograms.
Since they are carnivorous animals, the diet of a regular dolphin comprises of squid, herring and hake.
An interesting fact about dolphins that has captured the imagination of scientists for years is their method of communicating with each other. It has been generally observed that dolphins make a variety of very high-pitch whistles and whines. Also they tend to use echolocation (which means a series of quick clicks) to identify things, such as prey and enemies in their habitats. |
